One of the stops on my whirlwind hike and bike ‘o rama last week was the Silver Lake Recreation Area near Brooksville. If you are traveling north on Interstate 75 you can see Silver Lake and the day use area right off the side of the road. With excellent camping, hiking and all that other good stuff that sends you out to places like this, Silver Lake is a great choice for a weekend stay in the Withlacoochee State Forest.
Just recently I found out that there are two other campgrounds out here at Silver Lake. What a fool I am. I’ve been coming out here for years and right under my nose are two more wonderful areas that have gone unexplored. The two campgrounds are Cypress Glen and Crooked River, both have great campsites and full bath and shower facilities. I’m thinking about staying at Crooked River campground sometime this summer, it looked like a great spot to camp and hike.
There’s a trail here as well, it’s a linear trail that runs up the side of the lake for about 5-7 miles. You can start down at Crooked River, head on past Silver Lake and right up on to the Florida Trail loop. That’s a good hike!
Crooked River campground would be my selection out here, I’d skip the Silver Lake campground as it is very near the interstate and seems like it would be pretty noisy. Cypress Glen looks good too, especially if you are more interested in putting your boat in the lake. Or your jet ski. Or perhaps a hovercraft or seaplane, if you are so inclined. I think you get the idea.
