Flat Island Preserve - Leesburg

Ahh, Flat Island. This is one of my all around favorite trails for a leisurely hike or a short run. As the name suggests, it’s flat! You won’t find any hills here, but you will find yourself peacefully hiking underneath ancient live oaks and cabbage palms.

Flat Island is managed by the Lake County Water Authority and the trail is part of the Florida Trail system. One highlight of the trail is the 440-foot boardwalk that leads to the canoe launch. I remember they used to have canoes here locked up and available for use, but they are no longer there. You will have to call the LCWA for more information if you are interested in kayaking or canoeing. The water is pretty shallow, so this may be the reason that the canoes were removed.

As usual, I will also tell you about the negatives of the trail. They’ve got a problem with hogs out here, so you may run into some trappers with dogs. On a previous hike I encountered the dogs and they weren’t too friendly, so take caution if you notice that the trappers are out.

The other negative would be the mosquitoes. Yes, I know it’s Florida and they are everywhere, but with the amount of surrounding marsh Flat Island has tons of the little bloodsuckers. Make sure you bring and apply some bug juice or your hike may evolve into a trail run. It’s getting really hot and humid early this year so I suggest an early morning visit.

Snow in Florida

Snow in Florida

It snowed this morning! Snow, sleet - whatever. We don’t get much of either, so anything that collects and is icy white gets called snow. We’ve had a week or so of really strange weather! Video taken in Inverness, Florida with a Canon Powershot SD780 IS.

Just a little video of a rainy day at the Iron Bridge area in the Withlacoochee State Forest. I just sat there (rain jacket on, of course) and watched it rain for about an hour. Good stuff.
